Jyugatsu-sakura (October cherry): Engaku-ji

A Jyugatsu-sakura (Prunus × subhirtella cv. Autumnalisblooms) tree blossoms twice a year. "Jyugatsu-sakura" means "a cherry tree which blossoms in October."

One-third of the buds of this tree usually come into blossom from about October and the remaining buds bloom in the next spring. The October flowers are said to be somewhat smaller than the flowers of spring.

It was a my great pleasure to again see these delicate and elegant flowers of sakura under such a crystal autumn sky.

The pale pink flowers of Jyugatsu-sakura are blossoming inconspicuously on the the leafless branches arched across the narrow grove path.

"Jyugatsu-sakura" means "October sakura" and its flowers modestly blossom in October and April.

This flower can be seen throughout winter as a humble but precious flower in this cold gloomy season.

Jyugatsu-sakura (Prunus × subhirtella cv. Autumnalis) flowers in Tokei-ji

Although spring sakura flowers bloom splendidly with the happiness of victory, the flowers of Jyugatsu-sakura blossom inconspicuously as if trying to avoid being seen.

"Jyugatsu-sakura" means the sakura which blossoms in October.

In the silent garden where the tints of autumn deepen moment by moment, I appreciate the modest and fragile beauty of this pale pink flower of October.
