Stone image of Jizo-bosatsu: Tokei-ji

Stone image of Jizo-bosatsu: Tokei-ji

A tiny stone image of Jizo Bosatsu (Jizo Bodhisattva), that looks like an innocent infant smiling benevolently, is enshrined quietly in the shallow hollow on the thickly moss-covered rock-face.

The young leaves of Iwa-tabako (Conandron ramondioides) have just come out from the narrow cracks in the stone-wall and are surrounding this small avatar of Buddha as if to offer up spring prayers.

Jizo Bosatsu reveals the Buddha's salvation for the lost souls cast into Hell and is also widely accepted as a guardian deity of children in folk beliefs in Japan.

Stone image of Jizo-bosatsu: Jochi-ji

As spring advances gradually, the sun ascends into the sky at a higher altitude.

The bright sunbeams shining through the leaves of the trees reach these hollows in the rock, where the small stone-images of Kannon Bosatsu are enshrined in perfect tranquility.

The trees and plants have steadily resumed their inconspicuous regrowth and are giving off the pleasant fragrance of life force into the quiet air surrounding me.

A stone-image of Buddha: Tokei-ji

A weathered stone image of Buddha is sitting still on the moss-covered slope in the shade of trees.

The seasons of the living are rotating swiftly in front of his eyes of eternal compassion.

A stone image of Shokannon in Tokei-ji

A small stone image of Shokannon in the thicket was softly illuminated by a ray of sunshine coming down through the branches of trees.

Shokannon is one of the six Kannons (the Buddhist deities of mercy) and, as a manifestation of the infinite wisdom of Buddha, rescues all living things from Hell.

In the left hand of this Kannon, a lotus flower which is beginning to open is held as the symbol of his supreme wisdom.

A stone image of Bodhidharma in Kencho-ji

A granite stone image of Bodhidharma was gleaming brightly in the clear and pure sunlight peculiar to late October.

Each time I stand in front of this solemn stone image in the quiet bamboo garden, I have the illusion that I can hear the sudden deep shout of Bodhidharma which he gives to waken and disillusion us from earthly passions and delusions.

Stone Bosatsu images in Engaku-ji

In the glaring afternoon sun, the sharp silhouette of a Hakuunboku (white cloud tree) is falling onto the Hyaku-Kannon garden (the garden of one hundred Kannon-bosatsu images).

The countless white flowers of this tree, which once blossomed in full glory in May, have already become the cascades of green fruits which are lazily swaying to the hot wind.

The moss-covered stone images of Kannon are quietly gazing into the currents of time passing swiftly in front of them.

A stone image of Buddha in Jyochi-ji temple

In the profound stillness of the temple, the weathered and mossed stones are sitting still and time is calmly and mercifully passing by.
